Memory Exceeded Error – Palm Treo 800w (Sprint)

We just received a report (April 14,2009) of a Palm Treo 800w (Sprint) showing a “Memory Exceeded Error” while attempting to use Aton Connect for Windows Mobile Professional. The phone is running Windows 6.1 Professional and there are no additional services or applications running in the background. The phone’s owner indicated that the phone has a 4GB storage card and 256MB of Flash memory.

This surprised us because we have worked to keep Aton Connect small so that users would not encounter memory problems. Our customers have been using our software with the Palm Treo 700w very successfully.

Our research uncovered these issues:

Only 128 MB of RAM in this new phone,
A larger 320 x 320 pixel display, and
Use of the larger Internet Explorer 6 in lieu of the Pocket Internet Explorer or Opera web browser.

The larger display and IE 6 constrain the available RAM to the point where “memory exceeded” errors can occur, and in this instance, did occur.

The 4GB storage card is not a factor, nor the 256 MB of flash memory in the phone. The critical type of memory, the first to be exhausted, is RAM memory. So far, we have only this report of a memory exceeded error for Aton Connect.

Please accept our regret at this occurrence, which appears to be a function of design of the Treo 800w. We have no fix at this time.
