Using Aton Connect with Cisco Concentrator 3000
Charles Wilde answers a question from a free trial user about using Aton Connect for 3270 and 5250 with Cisco 3000 series:
I downloaded the Trial version of Aton Connect to try to get my PDA to connect to our Cisco Concentrator 3000 series. We are using IPSEC with group controls. I need to connect and match the appropriate group name and password.
I tried Cisco’s software but it does not support WM 6.1. Is there a way to make your product work with this VPN unit?
Hello,
As you may be aware, the Cisco AnyConnect mobile VPN client does not support the Cisco 3000 series. From Cisco’s website:
“The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client is not compatible with Cisco PIX® security appliances or Cisco VPN 3000 Series concentrators. The Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client is compatible with all Cisco ASA 5500 Security Appliance models (running Cisco ASA Software Release 8.0.3 and later) and various Cisco IOS® Software-based routers.”
It appears that Cisco is encouraging migration from the 3000 to newer hardware.
There was a Windows Mobile client certified for the Cisco 3000 produced by Bluefire Security. However, it appears Bluefire Security has ceased operation.
Another alternative is to use TN3270 configured for SSL. This is supported directly by Aton Connect using the SSL security stack built into Windows Mobile. Although this eliminates the need for a VPN, it does require setting a configuration option in the TN3270 located in the mainframe or communications front end.
With Windows Mobile 6.0 and later you may (with the cooperation of your network administrator) be able configure the VPN client built into Windows Mobile with the Cisco 3000. The configuration of the Windows Mobile VPN client tends to be complex and may need shared keys to operate with the Cisco 3000.
Other third party mobile VPN options may exist, but we are not aware of them.
